What is mental health?
According to WHO, Mental health is a state of mental well-being that enables people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community. It is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in.
Why mental health is crucial?
According to WHO, Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development. Mental health is more than the absence of mental disorders. It exists on a complex continuum, which is experienced differently from one person to the next, with varying degrees of difficulty and distress and potentially very different social and clinical outcomes.
Mental health risks and protective factors can be found in society at different scales. Local threats heighten risk for individuals, families and communities. Global threats heighten risk for whole populations and include economic downturns, disease outbreaks, humanitarian emergencies and forced displacement and the growing climate crisis.
What factors affect mental health/well-being?
There are many factors that affect the well-being of individual, of society - locally and globally. There can be external as well as internal factors at individual level that can affect individual's mental well-being. At individual level, emotional ability, genetic factor, substance use. Also external factors such as socio-economic, geopolitical and environmental factors like harsh parenting, war, violence, inequality, poverty, climate etc, contribute to the well-being. The risk in mental health can manifest at any age.
Mental health prevention.
Mental well-being can be prevented at individual, group or society level. To start with identifying the mental risk of individual and rish factors associated/contributed in creating that risk. As per WHO, Reshaping the determinants of mental health often requires action beyond the health sector and so promotion and prevention programmes should involve the education, labour, justice, transport, environment, housing, and welfare sectors. The health sector can contribute significantly by embedding promotion and prevention efforts within health services; and by advocating, initiating and, where appropriate, facilitating multisectoral collaboration and coordination.
Mental Health and India.
As per the National Mental Health Survey (NMHS) 2015-16, 10.6% adults in India suffered from mental disorders while treatment gap for mental disorders ranged between 70% and 92% for different disorders. Further, the prevalence of mental morbidity was higher in urban metro regions (13.5%) as compared to rural areas (6.9%) and urban non-metro areas (4.3%). Citing NCERT’s Mental Health and Well-being of School Students Survey, the Survey highlights an increasing prevalence of poor mental health among adolescents exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, with 11% of students reported as feeling anxious, 14% as feeling extreme emotion and 43% experiencing mood swings.

Success Stories
Our son was struggling with emotional outbursts and had trouble adjusting at school. After just a few sessions with Emocope’s counselor, we noticed a real shift in his behavior. The therapist’s gentle and patient approach helped him open up. We finally feel hopeful again.

When my 10-year-old daughter started showing signs of anxiety and withdrawal, we felt helpless. Emocope’s child counselor made her feel safe and understood. The sessions brought visible change — she’s more confident, open, and happy now. As parents, we also learned how to support her better. Truly grateful!

Emocope’s family therapy sessions gave us tools to communicate with care and helped create emotional safety for all of us. We’re now stronger, more connected, and moving forward with greater understanding.
